Birth and Growth of NSS at NMU

The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the university started its independent functioning from the academic year 1993-94, with the approved strength of 6000 students. However, within four years, the strength of NSS in the University and its affiliated colleges increased to 9900 volunteers, out of which 4950 have availed the opportunities of attending special camps.

Aims & Objectives

  1. To provide pre-marital counselling to youngsters.
  2. To create awareness for various social problems.
  3. To create awareness about their human rights and status.
  4. To eradicate various problems existing in tribal and hilly areas, relating to nutrition and traditions.
  5. Counselling services to students of economically weaker sections.
  6. To run various schemes on value education.
  7. To enrich functional literacy.

N.S.S activity

Besides organising camps and cultural activities NSS Unit has conducted following activities.

1. Blood donation camps organised by various colleges in the last four years

2. Panlot Kshetra Vikas Karyakram

Under this scheme, students of various colleges under the jurisdiction of the University have done excellent work regarding the construction of Bandhara (dam) & water management.

3. Melghat mitra & maitry camp -

" SAMPARK " a non-govt. organisation has formulated a project named " Melghat Mitra " to help tribals of Melghat [Amaravati Dist.] who used to succumb to death due to malnutrition. Number of volunteers of the university N.S.S. Unit participated in the said camps.

4. AIDS Awareness Camps -

The N.S.S. volunteers participated in the Inter-University workshop organised by the Director of Health, Maharashtra state & Assistant Programme Adviser, N.S.S. Regional Center, Pune. Under this programme, Peer Educator Training Workshop was organised by 2 colleges.

1) Jai Hind Arts, commerce & Science College, Dhule. 100 students participated.

2) M.J.College, Jalgaon. 200 students participated. This training created awareness regarding AIDS among students.

5. Inter-University Workshop on AIDS & Poetry

A State level AIDS & Poetry workshop was organised at Toranmal, Nandurbar dist. under the chairmanship of Hon'ble Vice-Chanceller Professor Dr. S. F. Patil. In this four day workshop, about 60 volunteers - Poets from all universities, including Agriculture universities participated. Near about 200 poems in various poetical forms were presented by them.

For this workshop following were the Chief Resource persons : Prof. Ravikiran Zoal, Dean, Faculty of Artrs & Fine Arts ; Dr. D. S. Dokhore, Dy. Director of Health; Dr. Pandye, Tuberculosis Officer; shri. H. Suresh, State co-ordinator of N.S.S. and Shri. Atmaram, State Directorate of Information & Public Relation Officer.

6. Cycle Rally For Environmental Awareness

To create environmental awareness, a Cycle Rally was organised by the N.S.S. Unit with the help of Social Forestry Department, Nashik & Forest Department, Dhule under the guidance of Krushimitra Vasantrao Thakare & Dr. M. B. Shah.

7. Andhshradha Nirmulan Shibir

The N.S.S. Unit of the University organised Andhshradha Nirmulan Shibir for N.S.S. Program officers at Pantna Devi, Chalisgaon & Abhay Yuva Mahila College, Dhule, for N.S.S. students & program officers in collaboration with Maharashtra Andhshradha Nirmulan Samiti, Satara & Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai.

8. National Integration Camp

The camp was organised at the Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat (Assam). The team of our university not only participated in this camp, but also received an award of the best team in debate. Ku. Smita Deshmukh (a student of Arts, Commerce & Science College, Jamner) bagged the first award. In Elocution Competition, Shri. Sachin Joshi (student of S.S.V.P.'s Smt. P. B. Bagal Arts, Commerce & Science College, Dondaicha) stood first in Debate Competition.

9. Leadership & Personality Development Camp

Outcome of NSS activities

Each activity promoted understanding for others lay living together. This comrradiship, regardless of difference in cultural background, religion, economic disparity and rural vs urban divide among students, has cultivated feeling of one - ness and integration. Most of the students thought that they understood Environmental Science and human nature better through such activities rather than through formal education within 4 walls of classrooms.

11. Best NSS Volunteer award

The Govt. of Maharashtra selects outstanding volunteers of the NSS on the basis of their contribution to the cause of National Service. Miss Shyamala Pawar (Bhusawal) and Mr. Nagsen Pendharkar (Nandurbar) have been awarded the Best Volunteer Award of the Year 1997-98 and 1998-99 respectively. The award comprises of a momento, a certificate & a cash prize of Rs. 2000.


Students Activity

1] Students Council :-

                As per provisions of section 40,4[a] of the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994 , the Students Council of the University was constituted on 12 October 2001 and following office bearers were elected in its meeting held on 19th October 2001.

2]Youth Festival :-
                Youth Festival of North Maharashtra University was organised during 27th to 31st January 2002. About 250 students from various college participated in different activities and competitions held in different colleges affiliated to the university competitions for Story Telling, Poem Recitation, Elocution, Drawing & Spot Painting were held on 27th January 2002 at Art's Commerce & Science College, Pachora. Group Dance, Classical Dance & One Act Play were held on 29th January 2002 at R.C.Patel College of Education, Shirpur Dist. Dhule. Group Song, Classical Singing and Instrumental Recital were held on 31st January 2002 at S.S.V.P.S. Arts & Commerce College, Dhule.

3] Schedule Tribes Student's Self Confidence & Motivation Development Seminar : -
                Student Welfare Dept. and Karmveer A.M. Patil Arts,Commerce & Science College,Pimpalner has organized a 3 day Seminar on S.T. Student's Self Confidence & Motivation Development, on 27th to 29th November 2001 at Govt. Post Basic Aashram School Shevaga Tal.Sakri Dist.Dhule.
In these Seminars main objective was to develop personality of S.T. students & their leadership qualities.
Main Lecturers were
Prof.Shri. Ashok Borse, Prof.Shri. Sudhir Kothawade, Prof.Shri. L. G. Sonawane, Prof.Shri. Valvi, I.T.D.P.'s Project Officer Prof. Vilas Chavan Director, Student welfare, N.M.U., Jalgaon.
About 90 S.T.Girls & Boys participated in this seminar.

Achievements & Awards

University Level N.S.S. Awards : -

                The N.S.S. Advisory Committee of the university has decided to award prizes to the Best NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME P.P. & Best Volunteers for each district at the university level.The award for best N.S.S. Program Officer comprises of a momento, a certificate and cash prize of a Rs.1000/- each and the award for best N.S.S. volunteer comprises of a momento, a certificate and cash prize of Rs.500/- each.

State Level N.S.S. Awards - Distribution Program :-

                Govt.Of Maharashtra has decided to Award prizes to the Best Universities, N.S.S. Co-ordinator; Best N.S.S. Volunteers for state level in the year 2000-2001.

1. The Award for the Best University - North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon.
2. The Award for the Best Co - Ordinator - Prof. Vilas Chavan.
3. The Award for the Best Volunteers - Shri. Harishchandra Balchandra Sonawane,
                                                     Vidhya Wardhini Arts, Commerce & Science College,
                                                     Dhule.
The N.S.S. State Level Distribution Award function was held on 10th March 2002 at Patkar Bhavan, S.N.D.T. University ,Mumbai.
Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri. Vilasrao Deshmukh was the Chief Guest for this function. Hon'ble Higher & Technical Education Minister Shri. Dilip Valse Patil, Hon'ble Vice Chief Minister Shri. Chhagan Bhujbal, and State Liason Officer Shri. R. M. Velunkar were also present on this occasion.

Elocution Competition :-
      A] An Inter College North Maharashtra University Level Competition was arranged on 12th January 2002 at Vidhyawardhini Art's Commerce & Science College,Dhule.
            B] Suraksha Mandal Wardha arranged on 28th Kamalnayan Bajaj Memorial All India Inter University Elocution Competition held on 9th & 10 th January 2002 at Wardha.

Magazine Competition :-
An Inter College Magazine Competition for the affiliated colleges was organised by Student Welfare Department. 26 Colleges participated in this Competition.

Yashwantrao Chavan Inter Collegiate Magazine Competition :-
Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai organised an Inter Collegiate Magazine Competition "EKLAVYA". Arts, Commerce & Science college, Navapur received 2nd prize in this competition.
